Description

Under the auspices of globalization, the security of modern states and societies faces many risks and threats. They all have in common that they are increasingly of regional or even global nature and do not stop at national borders. Furthermore, they can less and less be addressed as distinct phenomena in classical categories such as military threat, criminal activities or socio-economic problems. Those challenges are of versatile origin, encompass various actors, driving factors and framework conditions and unfold their impact in many state and/or societal fields. Countering them requires comprehensive approaches that start with thorough analyses of the root causes of risks and threats, include cooperation amongst states and their security agencies and realistically evaluate the intended and unintended impacts of any counter-measures. This book series offers a forum to authors from different academic background to present their findings on contemporary security challenges and ways to counter them.

Prof. Dr. phil. Sven Bernhard Gareis,

The Influence of Economic Interdependence on US-China Relations

US-China tensions over global supremacy escalated over the last years, increasing the likelihood of a future conflict. However, an open conflict would have costly consequences for both sides due to the countries’ deep economic interconnectedness. Against this backdrop, the book addresses the question how high the incentives for both sides are to avoid conflict and continue cooperation out of economic considerations. The objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to assess […]

    Germany’s New Partners

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis Germany became Europe’s most influential nation state. Prepared by an international team of scholars, it offers unique, in-depth perspectives on the ways these evolving interactions affect the prospects for addressing recent and emerging security challenges. How Sentiment Matters in International Relations: China and the South China Sea Dispute

The rise of the People‘s Republic of China represents a major challenge for global politics at large and regional stability in Southeast Asia in specific. This book reveals that growing negative sentiment and disrespect experiences perceived by the Chinese side over time have contributed to Beijing‘s increasingly bold and proactive stance toward the South China Sea Dispute in recent years. At the same time, growing regional tensions and a hardening […]

Why States Rebel

Given the fact that two-thirds of all intrastate wars since 1945 have included foreign interventions, what drives sovereign states to support non-state conflict parties? In order to understand causes and calculations of this particular type of third party intervention, this book connects some of the most important contemporary debates in international relations, ranging from security cooperation between states and non-state actors to the effects of intervention on both local conflict […]

Deutsche Sicherheitspolitik zwischen „never alone“ und „never again“
