Women continue to be underrepresented in tech and design, resulting in their needs and perspectives being frequently overlooked. Addressing this gender gap requires substantial efforts across both academia and industry. While discussions around gender theories and the challenges of tackling tech and design from stereotypical viewpoints have increased, the focus often remains on the negative aspects. What is missing is a comprehensive look at real progress and the mechanisms driving it. This book closes that gap by showcasing successful initiatives and projects across various sectors – ranging from academia to industry, and from product design to engineering. It also examines how educational, social, economic, and ecological factors interplay in striving not merely for equality but for genuine fairness.

In the 21st century, we face complex challenges like environmental issues and social inequalities. Social justice, which involves equitable distribution of rights, resources, and opportunities, often intersects with environmental sustainability. This edited volume focuses on gender fairness, incorporating intersectional feminist theory. It highlights how inclusivity can foster fairness, although the book primarily addresses gender justice and diversity, recognizing their connection with other social differences. It also explores the link between ecological and social justice through a gender lens, a frequently overlooked aspect in sustainability efforts.Design, shaping everything from products to urban environments, profoundly influences our socialization and gendered experiences. Unfortunately, design often perpetuates biases, particularly against women, reinforcing traditional roles and disparities. This issue is exacerbated by digitalization, where gender biases in algorithms and smart technologies lead to exclusion and discrimination.The volume examines these biases in various design contexts—product, urban, game, and digital media—and offers strategies to address them. Aimed at design and tech students, educators, and professionals, it provides insights and practical examples to promote fairness in tech and design.
