Beschreibung

This book offers a systematic insight into the development of early childhood professionals in Europe. What are the requirements in terms of qualifications? What do career paths look like? What characterises the respective working contexts? What political initiatives are being taken? What challenges are there? These questions were analysed as part of a three-year research project in 33 countries. The book summarises the key findings and presents cross-national comparisons of selected aspects in the context of the differently structured systems of early childhood education and care.

The book draws together selected findings from a study on the early childhood workforce in the 27 member states of the European Union and in six non-EU countries. It marks the conclusion of the SEEPRO-3 study (www.seepro.eu), funded by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and based at the State Institute for Early Childhood Research and Media Literacy (IFP) in Munich/Bavaria.
Part I focuses on the contextual conditions of the ECEC workforce in general, looking at, for example, the governance of ECEC in different countries, providers and setting types, curricular frameworks as well as assessment and evaluation procedures. Part II focuses specifically on the workforce: on the overall composition of staff in early childhood settings, initial professional education, competence requirements and continuing professional development, and also alternative routes into the early childhood professions. Part III presents staff-related and system-relevant initiatives and reform strategies and concludes with expert views on country-specific challenges facing the workforce and ECEC system.
