Description

How can children from nomadic communities go to school, when they are permanently on the move? This publication deals with the necessity and the development of a mobile school system for pastoralists in Northern Kenya. The underlying system Ladders of Learning guides pupils and teachers with a reliable system for individualized learning in heterogeneous learning communities. The book gives a practical insight into international cooperation, curriculum-based learning material development and a flexible teacher education in the INES project of the Benedictine Fathers in Illeret, Marsabit County, Kenya.

The mobile INES schools offer Daasanach children access to basic education, taking into account the livelihood of the pastoral production team and the mobile lifestyle of these families. The local INES team develops subject ladders of learning for the lower primary level of the Kenyan curriculum and produces suitable learning materials. They offer Daasanach pastoralists in Northern Kenya teacher education with the system Ladders of Learning and equip and supervise them in their mobile schools. The mobile schools are based on the Indian MultiGradeMultiLevel-Methodology (RIVER) with its ladders of learning, which has been awarded with international prizes. The authors, in their role as educational experts for the system ladders of learning and consultants, adapted the system together with their local partners for the context of mobile pastoralism in Northern Kenya.
