Beschreibung

How does the interplay between family, institution and profession characterise early childhood education worldwide? In this volume, the authors analyse the historical and theoretical developments in early childhood education from an international perspective. They show how different national educational approaches and state interventions influence the relationship between the family and the education system in times of globalisation. The volume offers an in-depth look at the challenges and opportunities arising from local and global educational practices.

This volume explores the question of how the relationship between family, institution and profession in early childhood education has changed over the centuries and what role state intervention and social developments have played in this. The focus is on an international approach that combines both historical and theoretical perspectives. In modern societies, especially since industrialisation, the function of the family as the primary place of socialisation has changed radically. Previously largely spared from state intervention, the family has increasingly become the focus of public policy through the emergence of public childcare systems and social welfare structures – a process which, particularly in Western Europe, was characterised by the social ills of the 19th century. The book describes the major changes in family policy over the last two centuries, as they became apparent, particularly in Germany, through the development of legal safeguards, financial support structures and an increasingly expanded family-related infrastructure. These political measures reflect four social motives: the demographic motive (promoting human capital), the socio-political motive (reducing educational inequalities), the family-institutional motive (influencing family structures) and the emancipatory motive (overcoming gender and generational disparities). In view of these historical and political contexts, the volume reflects on the role of childhood and social pedagogy in the field of tension between family and state. The authors question the diverse perspectives and analyse how state intervention and the development of international education policies have changed the relationship between family and early childhood education in recent years. In doing so, they highlight the challenges and potentials that arise for educational practice and research.
